How The System Was Built

Behaviorally inspired, genetically wired.

The question we asked in the 1980s, the live test that answered it, and why the same method works for a Tier One operator and a nurse on a night shift.

In the 1980s I was trying to make sense of complex martial arts and self-defense systems that relied on fine motor skills, and something wasn't working. Not in the dojo — in the dojo everything works. It wasn't holding up in the stories people brought back from the street, or in the footage.

So I asked the question we have been asking ever since: what does your body want to do before anyone trains it, does that movement have a protective application, and if it does, why aren't we using it?

The answer did not come from a system or a style. It came from the live test — not what we believe, what we actually see. Watch the CCTV. Watch the phone video. Nobody moves like John Wick. Nobody moves like Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan. They flinch. Every time. Trained, untrained, athlete, doctor, soldier. No one's brain is ready for an ambush.

That is what behaviorally inspired means: the movement came from watching human behavior under real threat, not from inventing something and hoping it survives fear. And genetically wired means we did not have to install it. You were born with it. The startle-flinch is standard equipment.

Never fight biology. Make it work for you.

The Three Sciences

Understanding the sciences that underpin the SPEAR System®

We exclusively use the sciences of neurobiology, kinesiology, and psychology. That is what makes the system the easiest to learn and the most reliable during sudden danger.

01

Neurobiology

When you are startled, your brain shuts the door on fine and complex motor skills. That is not a flaw and it is not fixable with more technique — it is how you are wired. So the system was built on primal gross motor movement: the movement still available to you when you are scared.

02

Kinesiology

The startle-flinch fires before you decide anything. It is involuntary, it is protective, and it shows up the same way in a 22-year-old cop and a 55-year-old nurse. We did not invent it. We converted it — same shape, same speed, now with a tactical application.

03

Psychology

Fear is not the problem. Mismanaged fear is. You cannot be brave if you are not afraid, so we do not train people to feel nothing. We train them to breathe, keep moving, and turn the fear into fuel.

Put those three together and we can teach anyone, regardless of experience, how to detect danger, defuse and de-escalate, and if push comes to shove, defend themselves morally, ethically, and legally.

Detect. Defuse. Defend.
